Here are a few highlights from Week 9 of the Nomad Overland Rally as Teams pushed on toward the final week of competition. Team 116 Tembreull reclaimed First Place with 4,518 points. Team 101 Mercer slipped into Second Place with 4,470 points. Team 136 Smigiel had a strong Week and jumped into Third place with 4,471 points. The competition for the top spots is extremely close with less than 100 points separating First and Third, and a number of teams very close behind. Team 117 Lucas had a nice Week, completing several more Overland Stages. Team 135 Havlik completed all 12 Overland Stages during the past two Weeks and a lot of the Activities for points, getting a nice jump. Teams are currently exploring in Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Colorado, California, Wyoming, Texas, Iowa, Michigan, Virginia, and Utah. Advanced Map & Compass - nomadoverlandrally This task involved plotting and taking heads for various locations on the map - then going out to actually drive to this points and note how close your distances and headings were to the place in person. I did pretty well with this one - and even finished before the nasty monsoon hit, lol

Map and Compass advanced - nomadoverlandrally I had to do this one twice as once I got home, I realized I hadn’t done it right. Sometimes I need time and quiet to process instructions and tasks when they aren’t familiar.
Once I got my headings and distances on the map, I ran back out to the trail and checked my map locations in person. I was dead on with the first two and either exact or within 2 degrees on the third. Unfortunately my plotted place on the map for the third location was not an ideal place to stop on the trail and trees blocked my view of my mountain heading point.
Thankfully I finished before the monsoon hit, and was able to circle around the storm and miss the really bad part.

Stage 12 - nomadoverlandrally Teamed up with jessica.greyst for Stage 12, who came up from Maricopa. We took the long way over and down to Skull Valley. Jessica wanted to see one of the thickest/oldest trees in AZ - the Fremont Cottonwood in Skull Valley. That tree is a BEAST!! About 45 feet around the trunk and over 90 feet tall.
Thankfully the campsite I wanted that has some decent shade was unoccupied. We sat around my ignikoutdoors firecan fire pit and roasted marshmallows for s’mores. The temperature was perfect once the sun went down, which made for a comfortable night sleeping.

The 2023 edition of the Nomad Overland Virtual Adventure Rally began on June 5th and continues for ten weeks, ending on August 13th.
