Week 5 of the Nomad Overland Rally — the Teams are at the “halfway” point of the competition and this week saw a bustle of activity as many of the teams are out adventuring around the country. More teams are building up their points totals and we now have five teams with more than 3,000 points, eleven teams over 2,000 points and fifteen who’ve surpassed the 1,000 level. There was some movement around the leaderboard again this week, but Team 117 Lucas, with 4,350 points, is still holding on to first place for the third week in a row. Team 101 Mercer climbed into second place with 3,477 points, and Team 129 Astor (Team NC Old Man Overland) jumped into third place with 3,233 points. The Week 5 Challenge, “Outdoor Skills,” took a look at the teams’ knowledge of the wilderness, emergency survival, weather and natural navigation. The teams still have one more week to attempt it. Meanwhile Challenge #6 was released this morning and it involves paper maps and roadbooks.

Here are some Week 5 highlights from around the 2024 Nomad Overland Rally. More fun adventuring this week, as First Place Team 117 Lucas completed their twelfth Overland Stage in Montana. Team 101 Mercer, in Second Place, focused on completing more Driving Activities. Team 129 Astor (Team NC Old Man Overland) is nearing the end of their big multi-stage trip, and climbed into Third Place this week. Team 111 Potter has been steadily building up points and working with some of the other Colorado-based teams to organize training opportunities and trail runs throughout the rally. Team 103 Chasse is just beginning her epic multi-stage trip from the Mexican border to the Canadian border, and has already gotten in some Stewardship Activities. And many of the other Nomad Teams were out and about continuing to rack up points exploring in California, Oregon, Montana, Wyoming, Arizona, Texas and Virginia this week! The 2024 Nomad Overland Rally is complete and we are happy to announce our Winners for this third edition of the event (and the Winners of the Falken Tires) The final week of competition turned into a real “nail biter” as the Teams narrowed the points gaps so much that at the end only one point separated first and second place, and third place was a tie! So many teams really worked hard this year amassing a record number of points and also completing 37 Stewardship activities on trails and public lands around the USA while they were out adventuring. We want to CONGRATULATE ALL THE TEAMS who got out there and pushed themselves to do as much as they could — a few of the Teams actually went “above and beyond” completing all the possible activities and tasks even after they had maxed out their available points. Week Ten was the final week of competition in the 2024 Nomad Overland Rally and the teams used this last week to grab as many points as they could, narrowing the “point-gap” to a single point. Final Stewardship activities and final Falken Tire PrecisionChallenges were completed and then the teams# had to wait for the final points tally before the announcement of the official winners. nomadoverlandrally Rally ID selfie montage!! I am not fond of selfies - not fond of my face, lol, but it was great experience to go out of my comfort zone! Excuse the fact that I’m somewhat off time with my photo switches - I only have so much patience and limited talent with reels, LOL!! Today is the final day of the 10 week Rally. Winching on the trail - nomadoverlandrally I decided to go out on a little evening trail ride last night to see if I could get a few more Nomad Overland Rally items from the photo quest list.
I also decided to break out the recovery gear and attempt a self rescue with my Warn winch since I’m alone on the trail quite often. I’m really glad I did too as I discovered my winch is not working correctly and I had some trouble with it not wanting feed back in. I’ve had the winch on there since 2017 and Bad Dulcy hasn’t really done any maintenance to it. Definitely time to give the winch a little love.
I also have wanted to change out my steel cable for synthetic for a few years and I definitely have decided to remove that completely useless light bar I have in the front bumper. Its puts out no light and blocks my view of the cable feed back onto the winch. When I ordered the light bar with the bumper back in 2017, I thought it would be great - bright extra light for those dark forest roads - yeah, NO! It’s sadly worse than stock Toyota headlights.
So now to look at a synthetic Warn cable to replace the steel and figuring out if I can get to the winch without completely removing the front steel bumper - ugh!! Laziness and not wanting to do that is likely the reasons I have been avoiding dealing with the winch. I actually wanted the winch way back when because I figured if I had it, I’d likely never need to use it. Like bringing a rain jacket when it’s supposed to rain all day - but it doesn’t rain - because you were prepared, LOL!

Archaeological site - nomadoverlandrally Montezuma Well and the Pithouse ruin in Rimrock AZ near Camp Verde. The Well is actually a sinkhole over a spring and contains arsenic and high levels of carbon dioxide which means fish can’t live in it. It is thought to have likely been used to water crops for settlements in the area over 1000 years ago.
The pithouse ruin is a preserved site that shows where support beams would have been on the completed dwelling. This pithouse is one of 4 in the area and is thought to be from about the year 1050. There is also an artist’s rendition on what the complete pithouse would have looked like
The Montezuma Well site to this day is still considered sacred to many local tribes.
Montezuma Well is also dog friendly - on a leash - but it was way too hot to bring mine on the trail this day

Participate in a Training Event - nomadoverlandrally As a precursor to the Wilderness First Aid class I’m going to take in September in Flagstaff, I signed up for a CPR/first aid class that was held yesterday in Prescott by Granite Mountain Training.
I had never taken a CPR class but had an idea of what the process is. I did learn though through the training equipment monitor that you have to actually push much harder on the chest than you may realize to get the compression needed to work the heart.
I also got good insight on some additional items I should be carrying in my first aid kit like a better tourniquet and a CPR face shield.

Trail Clean Up - nomadoverlandrally Headed over to Coconino National Forest to grab a few more items I needed for points in the Nomad Overland Rally. While driving down to Montezuma Well from Beaver Creek, I noticed a lot of trash on the sides of the road. I picked up 5 bags of trash, an old bucket and a 2x4. I also found a sweet pink shovel (lol) and horseshoe - I’m hoping for luck from the horseshoe, lol!! I would have picked up more trash but I ran out of room - but at least I did my part and left it better than I found it!

Trail Clean Up - nomadoverlandrally - I headed over to the Coconino National Forest in Camp Verde today to work on some of my last Nomad Overland Rally tasks and photo quest items.
On the way down to Montezuma Well, I noticed a large amount of trash on the sides of the road. I picked up 5 bags worth of trash plus a bucket and a 2x4. Unfortunately that was all I could fit in my trasharoo and there is only so much I will put in the back of my 4Runner. At least I did my part and left it better than I found it.
